    Choosing to be a wedding planner probably won’t make you a millionaire in your lifetime, but satisfaction and true happiness in your career is far more important than the money.  A wedding planner serves a pivotal role in the lives of engaged couples.

    Once the excitement of purchasing a beautiful engagement ring, playing out the romantic proposal, and celebrating the engagement is over, it’s time to start planning the big event.  

    The job is important, as you’re working to orchestrate one of the most important days of a couple’s life together.  Check out a few steps to becoming a full-time wedding planner, and consider whether or not the position could be right for you.  

    Learn everything you can about the job

    You don’t need a college degree to be a professional wedding planner, but it helps to have wealth of knowledge backed by credentials.  There are diploma programs to train aspiring wedding planners to navigate contract negotiations, vendor relationships, financial management, marketing, and more.  

    Formal training will teach you the ins and outs of an array of different wedding ceremonies, proper attire customs, and the sort of etiquette that would be expected in the chosen setting. Once you have a firm grasp on the final production of a wedding, you’ll be more equipped to recreate your own visions.  

    Get some experience under your belt

    The more hands-on experience you have, the more competent you look on paper.  Couples are far more likely to trust you with their big day when you can show them you have experience doing the job.  

    Find a reputable mentor, and work alongside them for a while to gain valuable insight to the job.  Also, while completing a diploma program, participants are required to complete hands-on hours working in the field.  

    Work to earn a professional certificate

    Gaining an extra certificate for display in your office will help make your wedding planning abilities look much more dependable.  The American Association of Certified Wedding Planners offers a certification, requiring professionals to pass courses in sales, workflow, business relations, and budgeting.  

    You need to be a good problem solver

    If you’re good at seeing the solution to complicated problems, then becoming a wedding planner may fit your bill.  Problem solving is a huge part of the job of a wedding planner, as there are so many different variables involved in orchestrating the perfect wedding day. 

    Consider choosing a niche for your career

    It may be helpful for marketing purposes to choose a particular niche within the realm of wedding planning.  You may choose to specialize in same-sex marriages, same day marriages, or even Jewish (or some other special religious ceremonial) wedding types.
